Black Women Seek Inclusive Healthcare in South Korea

A growing number of Black American women are crossing the globe to South Korea in search of patient-first healthcare, driven by systemic disparities and limited access to diagnostic testing in the US. According to health officials, requests for comprehensive health check-ups have risen significantly among Black American women, particularly for screenings that detect cardiovascular disease, hypertension, gynaecological disorders, and other conditions where they face disproportionately high rates of health disparities.

The experience was a 'night and day' difference from what they had encountered in the US.

In South Korea, these women are finding one-day health examinations that bundle cardiovascular imaging, thyroid ultrasounds, gynaecological screenings, bloodwork, and specialist consultations into a single visit. This approach offers Black women convenience and an opportunity to have their concerns investigated comprehensively. As one patient noted, the experience was a 'night and day' difference from what they had encountered in the US.

This trend highlights the need for a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system in the US, where Black women's experiences are often minimized or dismissed. By seeking care abroad, they are exercising a form of self-care and advocating for a healthcare system that prioritizes their needs.
